The Questions

What people actually ask us.

Six of the questions we hear most often, from Healthy Homes deadlines to retrofit pricing and winter power bills. Tap any question to expand the answer.

Q01 / Q06
Compliance

Is my rental property Healthy Homes compliant?

Since 1 July 2024, all private rental properties in New Zealand must meet the Healthy Homes Standards. Canterbury falls within Climate Zone 3, which requires the highest insulation R-values in the country, R 3.3 for new ceiling insulation and R 1.3 for underfloor.

Q02 / Q06
Heat Loss

Where does heat actually escape from a Canterbury home?

Heat escapes your home through every surface that separates warm indoor air from the cold outside. In a typical uninsulated Canterbury home, around 40% of heat is lost through the ceiling, up to 35% through the walls, and the remainder through floors, windows, and draughts.

Q03 / Q06
Energy Bills

How can I cut my power bill this winter?

New Zealand households spend $2,000 to $3,000 a year on electricity, and heating is often the biggest single expense during winter. The good news is that a few straightforward changes can make a real difference to your power bill.

Q04 / Q06
Moisture

What can I do about condensation and mould?

Condensation happens when warm, moisture-laden air meets a cold surface. In Canterbury homes without proper insulation, you will often see water streaming down windows on winter mornings, damp patches on walls, and mould forming in corners and behind furniture.

Q05 / Q06
Retrofit

What's the best retrofit insulation for an older home?

Many Canterbury homes were built before insulation was required by the Building Code, and a significant number had insulation disturbed or removed during post-earthquake repairs between 2011 and 2020. If your home was built before 2008, there is a good chance it needs an upgrade.

Q06 / Q06
Health

Does insulation really make my family healthier?

New Zealand research consistently shows that cold, damp housing is linked to higher rates of respiratory illness, asthma, and hospital admissions, particularly among children under five and adults over sixty-five. A warm, dry home is one of the most effective things you can do for your family’s health.
